For those not growing in tunnels . . . YET . . . this Spring might convince you

A week'ish ago, it was 90 F here at NorthEastSeed. Memorial weekend has brought low 40's at night and rain that never seems to quit. But truthfully, the rain gauge only said 1.5" this AM.

So if you haven't made the jump into high or low tunnels yet, the conventional wisdom of not planting before Memorial Day is spot-on this year! Our field-grown tomato plants will have all their tomatoes removed when they go in later this week. Early fruiting is often a sign of stress. Removing the fruits will allow the plants to put on new growth.

Peppers, OTOH, do fine with 'early' fruiting. But since we start our peppers in January, the fruits really are not early.
